Abstract Botanicals

About the Class

This 6 week course explores botanical forms as a starting point for creative expression, guiding students from observation into abstraction. Using leaves, plants and natural elements as inspiration, we will experiment with drawing, collage and mixed media techniques to explore shape, colour, texture and composition.

Through a series of guided exercises, students will learn how to simplify and transform natural forms, building confidence in working more freely and intuitively. The course gradually leads towards the development of a personal abstract artwork on canvas.

Classes are relaxed and supportive, encouraging experimentation and curiosity rather than perfection. This course is ideal for beginners as well as those wanting to reconnect with creativity in a calm and inspiring environment.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the course students will learn:

• How to observe and simplify botanical forms into shapes and patterns
• How to explore ideas using painting, collage and mixed media
• How to develop natural inspiration into an abstract artwork
• Confidence to experiment and work more freely with creative materials

MATERIALS LIST 

• A3 multi-media sketchbook (200gsm) (Prime Art or similar)
• A selection of 4-5 paint brushes -  big to small (different types or sizes)
• Drawing pencils (HB, 2B or similar)
• Charcoal sticks or pencils
• Oil pastels (does not need to be an expensive brand)
• Black Acrylic Ink
• Acrylic paints: primary colours (red, blue, yellow), plus white and black
• Watercolours   (this is can be tubes or paint box - also again does not need to be expensive version)
• A palette or flat surface for mixing paint
• A cloth/rag
• Paper towel
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• 1x box canvas, students can choose their own size. 

Class Fees

This classes runs for 6-week terms, giving students time to properly explore techniques, experience growth and complete meaningful work.

• R1 350 per month (2 monthly instalments)
Pay the first instalment online to secure your spot. The studio will invoice the remaining two instalments and send friendly reminders when they’re due.

Missed Classes

We totally get that life gets in the way sometimes, and while we would love to run make up classes for each class, it’s really hard to find gaps in the timetable to do that so we have come up with a plan!

Each member will get 1 free token to use during the time for any other (suitable) class to use if they have missed a class. This a great way to explore other mediums too! We just ask that if you have missed a class to make use of one by mid term and one in the 2nd half of the term so we can ensure you get your class of choice and space out class numbers (keeping to max 12 per class). Please reach out to Georgina to arrange and make sure the class you want to do is suitable for your skill level and that there is space in that class.
