4 week Mini Series: Expressive Abstraction | Starts 7th March
EXPRESSIVE ABSTRACTION: A 4 WEEK EXPERIENTIAL JOURNEY
Dates: Every Saturday from 7th March - 28th March
Suitable for: All skill levels - Sue is renowed for meeting artists where they are at in their journey.
Join Sue Kaplan on a 4 week art course using a variety of materials and techniques.
Running for 3 hours each week, Sue will share images and throw in a bit of art history while we work with a selection of paint, ink, charcoal and other exciting media.
Each session you will experiment with various processes culminating in a finished work. The sessions will allow you to continually evolve your practice where you have the time to experience the unfolding of a process and not be reduced to prescription or formula, allowing you to reach your fullest expression in a safe space with an experienced person to guide you. I teach you to look and think a bit differently, so that the purpose of art isn’t just to master a skill, but to find peace during the process as well. I will also share a number of techniques and media using various mark making exercises, giving you the tools to develop your own creative language. I am a happy to give a list of materials you can use once you feel more used to the various media.
A bit about Sue:
I see art as an anchor in a very choppy sea; helping with focus, staying present and giving you a voice that is unique to your narrative. Art adds meaning to your life in this confusing world. It can be an escape and a homecoming.
Painting is my meditation and my confidante. It is a soothing balm from the woes of the world, and although sometimes a struggle to juggle, its capacity for what It can evoke, spurs me on. It’s about timelessness and finding balance and listening to podcasts and excavating a voice. it’s about finding silence and colour and space. Once I find my groove, I ride the wave.
Paints: visceral materiality helps me find the nuggets, no matter how prosaic the subject matter. I paint in a fairly intuitive way, like a sort of diary; more impulse than rigour, but still engaging in my values and identity in the moment.
I’m grateful for my students, who form a continuous part of the dialogue and by default, are wonderful extensions of the workings of my rambling creative processes. One practice overlaps the other.
I have an MAFA from Wits; an Honours Degree in Curating from UCT; a BAFA from UNISA, an Adv Dip in FA from Wits; as well as Art Therapy and Zen Coaching courses. I have worked in many different communities over the years both in Johannesburg and cape town. I now teach in two venues, consult in ongoing capacities as well as facilitating art workshops. I am also a zen coach, using art as a therapeutic tool.
